Remembering a moment of my Black History.
These images are from an amazing photo shoot, somewhere in New Jersey with photographer Dana Lixenberg. Working on a campaign for Target. More than 10 years ago. I’m still impressed by the power of these portraits.
In the mail this week.

Cheek to tweet.
Career transitions, always tricky. Watching colleague, Stephanie Wolf’s transition from ballet dancer to journalist has been inspirational. I met Stephanie when she was dancing with James Sewell Ballet. A few years later, after stints in New York and Colorado I watched her segue from dancing to social media management to journalist. Best of all, Stephanie accepted a position with my client Friend and Johnson managing their social media. I have been thrilled to have a designated writer on that part of the business. So happy, that this week I helped craft a blog post for Friend and Johnson introducing Stephanie to their readers.
My rocking cats.
Focusing on my personal work of late. Looking back through sketchbooks and project notes. I pursued this cat project for a number of years. Inspired originally by a friend holding up her Siamese cat, explaining that this is how you show a cat, if you were to have a cat in a Cat Show. I was really impressed by the cat’s silhouette. All those circular shapes, so graphic. I did some drawings which lead to a 3D concept, rocking cats. I had a builder create the rockers and cat shapes in wood. And then I painted the cats in oils.
Painting the onions. Purple, yellow, the rose patterned plate.
Ha! I love this snowman.
thank you David Shrigley.
Some projects, tedious yet ultimately satisfying.
“I dreamed I danced in my Maidenform bra.”
The first thing that came to mind when Kevin White showed me his photos of Claire Callaway was the Maidenform campaign from the 1950’s. Such an outrageous, yet sticky campaign!
No, I refrained from using the photos to spoof that campaign. Opted instead to package the new work in a mini portfolio envelope, found on Marsupial Papers, showcasing four portraits of Claire. Writer Jo Marshall interviewed Claire about the shoot. I included Claire’s thoughts about working with Kevin, placing the text on an illustration I created.
